I love this kind of style for traditional portraits. One of my favorite restaurants has a bunch of portraits like this of famous people hanging up in it and they're always cool to look at. It's smooth and crisp, almost looks printed, but also gives kind of a fluidic feeling. It's stylized enough to feel really artistic but also keeps the subject recognizable.

I think your choice of color is excellent. There are some who might say this kind of painting needs a more standardized color scheme (that is, the blue areas in the hair would probably be the yellow shade instead) but I think it works better this way since he seems like the type of dude who would really play up the black hair thing. One thing I will say though about the blue is that it seems thinner than the other shades. I can almost see little white parts from the canvas showing through, especially around the edges. I'm not sure if it's really like that or if there was some artifacting from the photo or something, but it's a little distracting.

The only other thing I feel might be off is the way he's centered. I can tell he's not supposed to be "in the center" here, but he's not shifted or zoomed-in enough to make that angle work so well. It's creating a bit of a tangent with the side of his hair and the side of the canvas, and even more so with his chin and the bottom. It's nothing major of course, but I feel it could have been better if the portrait was drawn at a diagonal angle in which his cheeks and chin were not parallel to any of the sides on the canvas itself. Either that, or to have played up the symmetry more by sticking him right in the middle. Sometimes that makes things boring, but when you've got a stare as intense as this, that symmetrical/centered/straight-on look actually works quite well.

Right off the bat, I have to say that I love the way you've posterized the portrait. You've really given this traditional painting that look that generally only stencils or computer programs can achieve, with that wonderful crispness and pure color that brings up images of thermal or infrared rendering.

One that that I'd really like to comment on is how you've photographed the image. I'm not sure if you intended for the checkered background to be part of the piece or not, but if it isn't, than that's a lack of craftsmanship in documentation. If it is, it's an interesting choice, but not really one that I would have pursued. I'd have to say the same about the fact that the portrait is off-centered. I feel that if it were more centered, even if it deviated from the source image, it would be more effective, and evoke a sort of mug-shot style of portrait. With something like this, you have a lot of opportunity for a "Che Guevera" moment.

Wow this looks fantastic! You've captured the posterised effect perfectly, and I really like how you've done the highlights in his hair :) I also like the shadow under his nose, and how you've done his mouth :) you definitely should be proud of it :) I could tell it was him a mile off :D
